Authentic Iowa Maid-Rites

This recipe makes enough to serve 6-8 people.
I give quite a generous portion on large, freshly made bakery buns so we only get about 6 servings out of it, but if you used smaller buns you could serve quite a few more people

Ingredients

3      Lbs. Ground Beef best with 85/15 ground beef; could use 80/20 - just not super lean
1      SmallOnion chopped - use 1 tablespoon of Minced onion if there are onion haters around
1      Cube Beef Bouillon * see note below
1      Cube Chicken Bouillon * see note below
1 1/2 Cups Water Tap water gives it that "authentic" Iowa flavor...
if you're in Iowa that is
2      Tbsp.Brown Sugar packed... (Brown Sugar is always measured packed)
2      Tbsp.Apple Cider Vinegar this space intentionally left blank?
2      Tbsp.Worcestershire Sauceget the good stuff -- Hint: Lea & Perrins
1      Tbsp.Soy Sauce Low sodium is fine... what are we, Animals?

Instructions

  1. Add the first nine ingredients to the crock pot.
Stir together to combine ingredients and break up the ground beef.
  2. Cook on High for 4 hours.
Stir occasionally to combine ingredients as they cook and to keep the beef from clumping together.
The smell that emerges from the crock pot each time you stir it is to die for!
  3. Serve on hamburger buns... don't be shy, the messier it is the more authentic the sandwich!
Serve with condiments of your choice but remember the traditional condiments are pickles and mustard.
I highly recommend ketchup, mustard, and a slice of American cheese.
  4. Enjoy!!!
*NOTE* Granulated bouillon or bouillon powder is better for the crock pot especially if you can't stir it during cooking.
If you must use a cube, Dissolve them in the 1 & ½ cups of water before adding to crock pot. I like doing this with any of the bouillon.

The granulated conversion is usually 1 tsp. = 1 cube, but read the jar.
